Wednesday’s Tea #7

Viewer Discretion Advised

Oh, this is going to be a real pick a direction nightmare. This is definitely off subject, but a question is a question. This might not be a concern for some authors (book burning), but subjects like this does rear its ugly head from time to time. Let’s just pull the pin on this one and Let-Er-Rip.

Who, How, and Why are we so drawn and rely on and allow ourselves to be controlled by (Censors and Censorship of the) the RED button pushers. Regardless of the reason for transmission delay due to an unforeseen incident at a Super Bowl Halftime Show that had caused Censors to drool and get out their best sticks to beat the hell out of the general public . Of course, this had caused people all over the world to scratch their heads trying to figure out what was going on (almost a bad as Who Shot JR –TV show from the late 70s called Dallas.). We are all in agreement that not everything can be experienced by everyone and some viewers may actually need some advice.

Think about it. Who are these viewers, we are trying to advise? People really don’t go to the car races to see a clean start to finish event. People don’t go to a football game (both kinds) to see a non-contact sport. And, I was actually talked into seeing a fight and in the middle of the second round a hockey game broke out. And, believe you me, ruffians play football (soccer) and gentlemen play rugby, or is it the other way around. My point is, those who we allow to have discretion in what they feel is and isn’t undermining our society by the use of their finger on the RES (sensor) button may be out of tune with what is the current standards of their society or what the majority deem as acceptable(or the new normal). I just love the UK newspaper with the… Lovely lady of the day. So what if I like a lovely set of coconuts (Yes this is a Bennie Hill reference-RIP). The next question that has me perplexed is How.

How are these RED button pushers determining what is acceptable and what the viewer should consider being discreet in their viewing. As quite a bit of the world has realized, these RED button pushers have had their panties twisted into knots for years. To prove this point all you have to look at is the revenue that uses to be exclusively tied to free airways and now belong to those pesky little annoyances call Cable TV and Pay Radio. These RED button pushers believed no one would pay to have their viewer discretion advisements removed. The big three has never recovered and some idiot decided that hostile political charged talk radio shows were a comparable alternative to comedic satire. I can go on and on about the How the RED button pushers are trying to gain back control by insisting the masses would be better served by them through anger and fear. But, I would rather watch cable and give them five choices to pick the finger I wish them to know my true feelings about what they claim as their way of protecting us, but is no longer allowed just for the sake of control. This led me to the Why. I’ll let this last one come from another source.

Why were the RED button people needed and how they came into power? For us in the US, according to Wikipedia; Beginning in the 1830s, censorship in the United States involves the suppression of speech or other public communication. This of course, raises issues of freedom of speech, which is constitutionally protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. This freedom, though fundamental, has also been accompanied since its enshrinement with contest and controversy. For instance, restraints increased during periods of widespread anti-communist sentiment, as exemplified by the hearings of the House Committee on Un-American Activities. It is also legal to express certain forms of hate speech so long as one does not engage in the acts being discussed, or urge others to commit illegal acts. However, more severe forms have led to people or groups such as the Ku Klux Klan being denied certain marching permits or the Westboro Baptist Church being sued, though the initial adverse ruling against the latter was later overturned on appeal in the US Supreme Court. Some recent laws have restricted forms of hate speech, however. The First Amendment is against censorship imposed by laws, but does not give protection against corporate censorship, the sanctioning of speech by spokespersons, employees, and business associates by threat of monetary loss, loss of employment, or loss of access to the marketplace. Legal expenses can sometimes be a significant unseen restraint where there may be a fear of suit for libel.

So in a nutshell, you have to advise a person if a boob is showing, but it’s OK to spout hate, but is morally wrong to use profanity in a Rap song, but its Ok to sue a person who called a company’s owner a cheap Bast^*$d, and to speak against the RED button pushers will instantly be seen as a seditious act against all that is good and wholesome. (Get out the homemade Apple pie boys, before it goes bad.) It seems as long as money isn’t involved the RED button pushers actually don’t give a shit. Oop! They aren’t concerned. But, if you throw a dollar sign on it, or it’s in the public spotlight, get out the old Viewer Discretion Advised stamp and watch them go to town. Well that’s about all. I’m going to relax and watch me “Adult Advisory, Graphic Violence, Adult Language, Parental Guidance, Viewer Discretion Advised cartoons. Hey, I like South Park and Boondocks. SD
