Reasons & Realities 6

Copyright Disclaimers

Copyright Disclaimers are not just a necessary evil, but a necessary lifesaver.
Here are a couple of Authors who knows a thing or two about this important subject used to protect yourself as the author.

     Here are some examples and purpose for Copyright Disclaimers for particular subject matter protection.
Let’s say you are writing a memoir or recent history. You may want to have a copyright disclaimer along these lines;

Some names and identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of individuals.

Here’s something for Novels and Short Stories

“This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.”

This one falls into both Memoirs and Autobiography.

“I have tried to recreate events, locales and conversations from my memories of them. In order to maintain their anonymity in some instances I have changed the names of individuals and places, I may have changed some identifying characteristics and details such as physical properties."

Lastly, lest look at what a Copyright Disclaimer would look like for Advice or How-To

“Although the author and publisher have made every effort to ensure that the information in this book was correct at press time, the author and publisher do not assume and hereby disclaim any liability to any party for any loss, damage, or disruption caused by errors or omissions, whether such errors or omissions result from negligence, accident, or any other cause.”
The example above comes closer than all the rest to clearly demonstrates why Copyright Disclaimer is more than a necessary Evil. Copyright Disclaimer are clearly a safety blanket spread out ready to catch you when you fall, or at least allow you to use plausible deniability to protect yourself and your work..

You can also see the  TMG (The Midnight Gangster) Videos on Copyright Disclaimer through YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKNxYhR_LAI . It may only be 53 seconds long, but it is time well spent.

     The last thing I would like to impress upon you with this subject is given credit. As the old saying goes (with a new twist at its end), Give Credit Where Credit Is Due even if it is yourself. Here are areas of note:
